Last night at dinner, my sister started a line of conversation with
"My favorite mashed potato story is..." I wondered aloud if everyone had a mashed potato story. My father had a baked potato story. I had a raw one. Mom had a potato soup story. It was an interesting line of conversation, that didn't quite make it all the way around the table.
What is your favorite potato story?

I don't have one.
But, did you know, butter soaks in better if you bake a potato in the oven rather than in the microwave.
A few days before my first child was born, my wife and I went out to dinner at a place called the “Fish Market.” We had a good meal, but my wife was disappointed that they did not serve baked potatoes. We both thought that odd for that type of restaurant.
The day after my son was born, my wife’s family was visiting us in the hospital. Now, she’d been through 14 hours of labor and ended up having a c-section late in the night before…add that to some heavy pain medication and she was really out of it.
We were all talking and admiring the new baby when, out of nowhere she said, “They don’t serve baked potatoes at the Fish House.” We all got a little laugh out of that and went back to making silly noises at the baby. A few minutes later, she spoke again, “I can’t believe they don’t serve baked potatoes at the Fish House.”
Eleven years later and that’s still our code for non-sequiturs. If anyone says something out of context, we respond with “They don’t serve potatoes at the Fish House
In England, the kichen used to take leftover veggies and mix them in with the mash potatoes. Usually cabbage, brussels sprouts, whatever they had laying around. This mixture was called Bubble and Squeak. Any guesses how it got it's name? :-)
Potato Gun
All these stories are hilarious. I cannot think of one potato story. I need to work on that.
I got nuthin.
Markec, in the pot when they were cooking, they made the sound sounds bubble and squeak?
Or did they cause a bubble and then a squeak, digestively speaking?
I heard the other day on the radio that the original Mr. Potato Head came with just the facial features and that you were supposed to use a real potato to attach them to as your play thing. That's all I've got. Don't know if it's true anyway. Actually, I prefer Tater tots or Steak fries myself.
Greeny - a little of both. But the "proper" reason is the noises from the pot cooking.
